parents for permission to go home.

Medication can be stored in the clinic, provided the
appropriate authorization forms are provided

School Nurse Biography
Taryn Overman is the school nurse at Gar-Field Senior High School.  She is also an alumnae of Gar-Field Senior High School.  Mrs. Overman attended George Mason University and was awarded a bachelor's degree in nursing.  She worked for 3 years as an emergency room nurse in Arlington, VA before deciding that she wanted to be a pediatric nurse.  She has always enjoyed the educational setting and mentoring students.  Mrs. Overman works to assist students who come to the clinic in any way possible. She works closely with school administration, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and teachers in order to faciliatate the best learning environment possible for each and every student.  Her overall goal in school health is to help students work towards graduation while living a healthy, happy, and active life.

How do I know if I should keep my student home?

for Parents and Caregivers
 
Parents and caregivers should use the following questionnaire to assess the health status of their child on a daily basis.
 
Does your child have:
  1. Fever (100° F or greater)?            Yes          No
  2. Sore Throat?                               Yes          No
  3. Cough?                                      Yes          No
 
Should I keep my child home?
  • If you checked yes to fever and one of the other symptoms listed, keep your child home until they are fever free for at least 24 hours without using fever reducing medication.
  • If you have questions about your child’s health or symptoms, contact you child’s healthcare provider.
  • If your child has been diagnosed by a healthcare provider with a different disease, such as strep throat, follow your healthcare provider’s recommendation and school policy for when to return to school.
 
What should I tell my child’s school?
  • If you checked yes for fever and one of the other symptoms, tell your child’s attendance office that your child is home with influenza-like-illness.
  • If your child has been diagnosed by a healthcare provider with a different disease, such as strep, tell your child’s attendance office.

Medications in School
MEDICATION
It is the intent of the Prince William County Public Schools (PWCPS) to assist parents/guardians when they are unable to come to school to administer medication by giving needed medication to the student so that the student may maintain school attendance.
Every effort should be made by the parent/guardian for the student to receive needed medication outside of the school day.  Prescription or over-the-counter drugs, pain relievers, cough medicine, inhalants, etc., shall be administered to students by parent/guardians outside of school hours except in unusual circumstances.
The first or adjusted dose of medication shall be administered at home by the parent/guardian.  The first or adjusted dose will not be given at school.
ALL STUDENTS AND PARENTS ARE REMINDED OF THE FOLLOWING:
School personnel cannot administer ANY medication until a form, signed by the parent is on file in the clinic.  All prescription medication must also have a physician's signature on the PWC medication form before a prescription medication can be administered.  All medication, prescription and over-the-counter (i.e., Tylenol, Advil, cough drops, etc.) brought to school MUST be in the original sealed container and kept in the clinic.  It should be in small amounts as storage space is limited.
Students may keep in their possession certain medications, such as prescription inhalers and Epi-pens as warranted with a Health Treatment Plan on file signed by the physician.
Under no other circumstances will students be permitted to carry medication without the direct written agreement of the school nurse or an administrator.
